Choosing the Neck Shape for Your Fit<\/h2>\n
The neck shape should follow the silhouette of the garment rather than the other way round. These are the options brands ask for most often:<\/p>\n
- \n
- Crew neck:<\/strong> The default for regular and oversized tees. It sits close to the base of the neck and works with almost every fabric weight.<\/li>\n
- Mock or high crew:<\/strong> A slightly higher, tighter opening that looks deliberate on heavyweight and boxy cuts. It pairs well with thicker rib.<\/li>\n
- V-neck:<\/strong> Common in fitted, performance and jersey-style tees. It needs precise mitring or overlapping at the point of the V, so it is worth checking closely on the sample.<\/li>\n
- Scoop neck:<\/strong> A wider, lower curve often used in women’s and lighter-weight styles. It requires careful rib tension to avoid gaping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Whichever shape you choose, give the factory both the neck width (shoulder point to shoulder point along the opening) and the front and back neck drop. Those three numbers define the opening; the rib then has to be engineered to fit it.<\/p>\n
Rib Width and Fabric Weight: Getting the Balance Right<\/h2>\n
Rib width is measured as the finished height of the collar band. There is no universal correct number, but the rib should look proportional to the body fabric. A very thin rib on a heavyweight tee looks underbuilt; a very wide rib on a lightweight tee tends to curl and feels heavy at the neck.<\/p>\n

The rib fabric itself matters as much as its width. A 1×1 rib is fine and smooth; a 2×2 rib has more texture and more visible ribbing. Rib with a small percentage of elastane recovers better after stretching, which helps the collar return to shape when the shirt is pulled over the head. Neck Tape, Stitching and What Keeps a Collar Flat<\/h2>\n
The back neck seam is where the rib, the body and the shoulder seams meet, and it is often the roughest spot inside a cheap tee. Neck tape (also called back neck tape or shoulder-to-shoulder tape) covers this seam with a narrow strip of fabric. It does three jobs: it hides the overlocked edge, it adds stability so the neck does not stretch out of shape, and it gives a tidier, more premium inside finish.<\/p>\n
When specifying the construction, decide on these points:<\/p>\n
- \n
- Tape coverage:<\/strong> back neck only, or shoulder to shoulder for extra strength.<\/li>\n
- Tape fabric:<\/strong> self-fabric for a clean look, or a printed or woven tape if you want branding inside the neck.<\/li>\n
- Topstitching:<\/strong> single or twin needle around the collar; twin needle is the common choice for durability on streetwear tees.<\/li>\n
- Label position:<\/strong> a sewn label at the back neck or a printed neck label, which is more comfortable and avoids scratching.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

If you want the collar to become part of the design, a contrast rib is the simplest route. Ringer tees use a contrasting rib on both the neck and the sleeve cuffs, which gives an instant retro or sports feel without any print. Because the rib is a separate component, the colour can be chosen independently from the body, as long as both fabrics are available in the shades you need.<\/p>\n
Washed finishes deserve extra attention. When a t-shirt is garment-dyed, overdyed or acid washed, the rib and the body go through the process together, and they may shrink or take colour slightly differently. Asking for a washed sample, rather than approving the collar on an unwashed garment, is the safest way to confirm the neck still lies flat after finishing.<\/p>\n
\nTip:<\/strong> When you receive your sample, stretch the collar open over your hand five or six times, then lay the shirt flat. If the rib does not return to a smooth curve, ask for an adjustment to the rib length or composition before bulk, not after.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
How to Brief the Neckline in Your Tech Pack<\/h2>\n
A clear brief avoids most collar problems. Include the neck shape, neck width, front and back drop, finished rib height, rib type (1×1 or 2×2), rib colour, neck tape coverage, stitch type and label method. If you have a reference garment whose collar you like, send it or photograph it flat with a ruler; a physical reference is often more useful than a description.<\/p>\n

Why does a t-shirt collar become wavy after washing?<\/h3>\n
A wavy collar usually means the rib was stretched too much or too little when it was attached, or the rib has poor recovery. Correcting the rib length and choosing a rib with better recovery, such as one with a small elastane content, normally solves it.<\/p>\n
Is neck tape necessary on every t-shirt?<\/h3>\n
It is not strictly necessary, but it noticeably improves comfort, durability and the inside appearance. Most streetwear brands include at least back neck tape, and shoulder-to-shoulder tape is common on heavyweight styles.<\/p>\n
Can I use a contrast colour for the neck rib?<\/h3>\n
Yes. Contrast ribs are widely used for ringer and retro styles. The rib colour is chosen separately from the body, so you can combine colours freely as long as both are available in the chosen fabrics.<\/p>\n
Should I approve the collar on a washed or unwashed sample?<\/h3>\n
If the bulk garments will be garment-dyed, overdyed or acid washed, approve the collar on a washed sample. Washing can change how the rib and body shrink and sit together.<\/p>\n
